As part of the work we do with Combined Cadet Forces (CCF) across the UK, we’ve recently been awarded a new, special commission to produce a new CCF cap badge for the Combined Cadet Force of St Edmund’s College in Hertfordshire.
Commissioning a CCF cap or beret badge
With any new special commission, a client can be concerned about the supplier’s ability to interpret design requirements and exactly what design information must be provided by the client.
With Selcraft client’s don’t need to worry. We have many years of experience creating new items from new designs and re-creating and improving existing items. We can work from whatever design information you have or from a sample of an existing item. We will always produce new artwork, showing the design details and dimensions of the product(s) we will produce.

Our production process involves the very latest in design tools and methods coupled with traditional craftsmanship and processes.
Reviewing the existing design and producing design documentation
In this instance we were provided with an example of the client’s existing CCF cap badge. This was scrutinised by our design department. We then created colour artwork which was sent to the client for approval or comment.
As part of this process, we automatically tidy up areas of the design to ensure the best possible reproduction in the required material without altering the fundamental design of the item.
Consideration of special technical requirements
Although not always the case, many CCF beret badges are required to be light in weight. In this case, we followed the same production process as the client provided sample. We used positive and negative dies (moulds) where the base metal of copper alloy is squeezed between the two dies. This creates the required metal relief and appearance of depth whilst maintaining lightness in weight. We call this process “shell-back”.
Traditional Production Methods
All the cap and beret badges that Selcraft produce are traditionally die-struck using copper alloy base metal which is subsequently fashioned and processed into the finished item. These methods ensure the items Selcraft produce are both attractive, durable and long lasting.
We go the extra mile to ensure client satisfaction
Due to the large size of the order, once our colour design artwork was approved by the client, we proceeded to manufacture pre-production samples. This provides the ultimate failsafe for all concerned parties. The client is able to review and approve pre-production samples before the full order is produced.
With regards this item we were slightly apprehensive that the client supplied sample was bright chrome electroplated. We advised the client that whilst this particular finish is durable the inherent reflectiveness obscures the fine detailing within the design.
Due to our concerns about the reflective nature of a bright chrome finish, we agreed to supply pre-production samples in two finishes. The original chrome finish was supplied alongside samples using our recommendation of a less reflective satin nickel electroplate.
The less reflective finish allowed the badge details to be viewed more easily and the client decided to proceed to full production using the satin nickel electroplate finish.
